Celebrating AAPI Heritage Month: Spotlight on Dr. Joanne Sun
Health Care Heroes
In honor of AAPI Heritage Month, we are thrilled to shine a spotlight on Dr. Joanne Sun, a dedicated physician at Saint Francis Memorial Hospital. Dr. Sun’s journey in healthcare is not only inspiring but also a testament to the significant contributions of Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) professionals in the medical field.
A Journey Rooted in Exploration and Determination
Dr. Sun’s path to becoming a physician was not straightforward. Unlike many who enter the medical field with a clear goal, Dr. Sun explored various academic interests before settling on a career in medicine. “I was not someone who ‘always knew’ they wanted to be a doctor,” she shares. Initially pursuing a degree in Psychology, it was during a research internship on the effect of music on operating room patients that she found herself drawn to the medical environment.
Her journey took her through medical school in Wisconsin and a residency in Florida. However, a deep desire to return to her family led her to the Administrative Fellowship with Vituity, formerly known as CEP America, which placed her at Saint Francis Memorial Hospital. Here, she has remained, committed to making a difference in her community.
Impacting Lives Through Compassionate Care
Dr. Sun finds fulfillment in her ability to directly impact her patients’ lives, especially during their most vulnerable times. She highlights the rewarding moments when she collaborates with the Emergency Department (ED) team to create a safe space for patients. “Whenever I’m able to work with the ED team to provide a safe space for our patients, it’s rewarding,” she notes. Dr. Sun is particularly proud of the hospital’s efforts to provide essential services such as shelter, addiction services, and access to primary care.
One memorable patient interaction underscores the impact of her compassionate care. A frequent visitor to the ED for pain management, this patient eventually heeded the guidance of Dr. Sun and her team, resulting in fewer ED visits and a newfound passion for painting. This transformation not only brought joy to the patient but also to Dr. Sun, who cherishes the patient’s artwork displayed in her office.
Balancing Professional and Personal Life
In the demanding field of healthcare, Dr. Sun emphasizes the importance of self-care and well-being. She meticulously balances her clinical and administrative responsibilities, ensuring she remains present for her family. “I typically schedule all my meetings during school hours so I can be as present as possible with my family,” she explains. Regular exercise and occasional “reset days” help her maintain a healthy work-life balance.
Advocating for Diversity and Representation
As a daughter of Chinese immigrants, Dr. Sun understands the profound impact of representation in healthcare. She often uses her Cantonese language skills to connect with elderly patients, alleviating their fears of being misunderstood.
“Patients feel much better supported when they see and hear aspects of their own culture surrounding them,” she says.
This connection fosters a sense of trust and comfort, crucial in a healthcare setting.
Looking Forward: Hopes for the Future
Dr. Sun is optimistic about the future of healthcare, particularly the potential of technology and artificial intelligence to enhance patient care. She envisions a future where healthcare professionals can focus more on patient interaction, free from the burden of administrative tasks.
“I am excited to see how AI could potentially remove necessary but busywork from healthcare and the medical community can return focus to patients,” she shares.
In celebrating AAPI Heritage Month, Dr. Sun’s story reminds us of the vital role diversity plays in enriching the healthcare sector. Her dedication, compassion, and vision for the future serve as an inspiration to all aspiring healthcare professionals, particularly those from underrepresented backgrounds. Dr. Sun’s journey underscores that with persistence and openness to opportunities, anyone can make a significant impact in healthcare.
